Jacob’s staff served as a simple measuring device for astronomers, geodesists and navigators.

It was described by the Jewish savant Levi ben Gersen in the Middle Ages. Jacob’s staff is based on the principle of the similarity of triangles. The navigator places one end of the main staff against his cheek just below his eye.
