Moravian cartographic center in Velká OpatoviceThe largest exposition of maps and surveying in the country is installed in Velká Opatovice, not far from Boskovice. The Moravian cartographic center was opened in 2007 as a joint project of Velká Opatovice and the National Museum of Agriculture in Prague, with the support of the Moravian Municipal Archive in Brno and the National Technical Museum in Prague. The exposition focuses on the development of cartographical illustrations of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, from the earliest known records through the present. There are reproductions of fundamental works from cartographic history, for instance the prehistoric Pavlovská map (on a mammoth tusk), Klaudián's map of Bohemia (1518), Fabricio's map of Moravia (1569) and manuscripts maps. The exposition is rounded out with current maps and models of the land. The permanent exhibition is oriented towards not only cartography, but also geodetics, photogrammetry with cartographic polygraphy, and covers a wide range of surveying disciplines. It show instruments that are used in geodetics in the field (theodolites, tachymeters, range-finders and levels) and office techniques for drawing maps and plans. The exposition also displays photographic movie cameras and transformation apparatus for drawing from aerial photographs, on loan from the National Technical Museum. More information
