Older newsWe are happy to announce that the original projection roll by Émile Reynaud for projecting Autour d’une Cabine from 1894, was listed in the prestigious International UNESCO Register Memory of the World. It is now ranked among the 384 most significant documents with this evaluation, gathered from all continents. This unique Reynaud projection roll will be on display from February 23rd to March 1st, 2016. Then it will be replaced by a copy. The National Technical Museum opened the Center for Building Heritage in Plasy, in the newly renovated buildings of the former monastery brewery and mill. It serves as a unique center for documenting, exhibiting and educating in the fields related to the history of architecture, civil engineering and traditional construction methods. In August (26th-38th) we will open the extensive railroad depository in Chomutov for public access. The former locomotive depot of the Czech railway system contains over one hundred pieces of rolling stock and other interesting items of railroad technology. As part of the Prague Museum Night program, the National Technical Museum will be open from 7pm to 1am. NTM will offer visitors a chance to visit its exhibtions at night and will provide free admission. There will be a rich accompanying programme available which has become typical for the event (finish of the veteran car race "One Thousand Miles of Czechoslovakia, guided tours, ...). Find out more here. On Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th, the museum will host three functioning steam powered machines. The visitors will have the opportunity to see a Škoda-Sentinel steam car, a steam roller and a steam locomobile. This event is the accompanying programme of the Steam Engines in the Czech Lands exhibition. For the first time in 50 years a new steam locomotive was built in the Czech lands. New functioning replica of a steam locomotive Orenstein & Koppel from around 1900 will be presented behind the building of the museum. The locomotive ride will be accompanied by commented tours. At the edge of the Letná park, in front of the National Technical Museum, stands the oldest floored carousel in Europe. The National Technical Museum is planning to restore the carousel's structural parts in the immediate future, which, however, will not be enough to restore the carousel to a fully functioning state. Therefore, a cooperative project between the district of Prague 7, the National Technical Museum and other nearby institutions has been formed to plan the restoration of the remaining portions, and return the carousel to fully functional status in the near future. This initiative is open to sponsorship by the public, that is, to anyone wishing to help restore the Letná carousel. On this special occasion the museum will be exceptionally opened on Monday (10.00-18.00) The bureau for technical standards, metrology and testing (ÚNMZ), in cooperation with the National Technical Museum, has prepared an exhibition documenting its ninety-year tradition in Czech lands. Visitors will experience the history of setting technical standards, here as well as in foreign countries, starting with standard building stones in Egypt, see the breakthrough creation of standards in the Škoda Plzeň factory, right up through modern standards for nanotechnology and biomimetics. They will learn about the activities of standards commissions, the center for technical standards and the current structure and tasks of the actual ÚNMZ. The exhibition is housed in the National Technical Museum and opens January 29th, 2013.
